Questions
Comparing gateways.
Which payment gateway is cheapest in South Africa?
It depends on how your customers pay and how big your sales are. On published rates, paying by bank (PayShap or EFT) costs less than cards everywhere. rano charges a flat R2.50 for those, which is less than every gateway listed here from R 167 a sale; below that, a percentage rate costs less. On cards, rano is the lowest listed from R 35 a sale.
Are these prices VAT inclusive?
Yes. Most gateways publish rates excluding VAT, so we add 15% to compare like for like. Ozow’s page doesn’t say, so we take its rates as already including VAT, which favours Ozow.
Why might I pay less than these rates?
Most gateways lower their rate for higher monthly volumes or negotiate with larger merchants. These are the published starting rates a new merchant would see.
How often are the prices checked?
We recheck every provider’s published pricing page and update this page when they change. They were last checked on 11 October 2026.
