How it works

Four steps. About as long as it takes to read them.

01

You ask for payment

Send a payment link, put rano’s checkout on your site, or create the payment through the API.

02

Your customer picks PayShap

They enter their phone number and choose their bank. They can let the page remember both for next time.

03

They approve in their bank app

A request appears in their banking app with your business name and the amount. One tap approves it.

04

You know in seconds

The payment page, your dashboard and your webhook all update as soon as the bank confirms it.

PayShap requests reach customers of Absa, African Bank, Capitec, Discovery Bank, FNB, Investec, Nedbank, Standard Bank and TymeBank.

What it costs

Flat beats a percentage. Less than every rate below from R 167 a sale.

Questions

PayShap, explained.

What is PayShap?

PayShap is South Africa’s real-time payment system, run by PayInc (formerly BankservAfrica) and the banks. Money moves between bank accounts in seconds, any time of day. A PayShap request lets a business ask a customer for a payment that the customer approves in their own banking app.

How much can a customer pay with PayShap?

Up to R50,000 per payment, the scheme limit since October 2024. Each bank can set a lower limit for its own customers; if a payment is over it, the customer’s bank declines it and they can pay by EFT instead.

What does PayShap cost a business on rano?

A flat R2.50 per payment, VAT included, whatever the amount: R1.50 to the banks and clearing and R1.00 to rano. There are no monthly or setup fees.

What if my customer’s bank doesn’t respond?

If a customer’s bank is slow or declines the request, the payment page offers EFT in one tap, with a reference unique to the order. rano matches the transfer when it arrives and tells you.

Can a customer reverse a PayShap payment?

The customer approves each PayShap payment in their own banking app, and there’s no card-style chargeback process. Refunds are still yours to give, from the dashboard or the API.

When do I receive the money?

rano pays out to your bank account two business days after the payment.

Can I accept PayShap with rano today?

You can build and test with it today: rano’s test mode simulates PayShap end to end. Live payments start once our sponsor bank is in place and we’re registered as a payment provider. Early-access merchants hear first.
